Deomali-The highest peak of Odisha

Gupteshwar Shiva Caves & Temple

Known as the ‘Hidden God,’ Gupteshwar Shiva Caves & Temple beckon you to explore its mystical depths. Venture into the cave to behold the awe-inspiring Lingam, hidden within its sacred confines. Legend has it that Lord Rama traversed this very region on his journey to Panchabati, in Dandaka-Aranya. Nestled deep within a pristine forest, this site is a haven for adventure enthusiasts and devout Shiva devotees alike. Beyond the main cave, there are three to four nearby caves that are a must-visit for explorers. Engage the services of a knowledgeable guide or rely on the locals to unravel the cave’s mysteries. Don’t miss the hidden gem known as the “Sangam Point,” a 30-45 minute journey through the jungles, best undertaken with a guide.

Balda Cave

Balda Cave, a coveted destination in Koraput, offers a unique experience. Its vast flat surface atop the cave can accommodate multiple football matches simultaneously. Putsil-Pendajam

Putsil-Pendajam, often referred to as the Switzerland of Odisha, boasts unique hills that will leave you awestruck. Upper Kolab Dam

Situated at an impressive altitude of approximately 914.4 meters (3,000 feet) above sea level on the Kolab River, a Godavari tributary, the mighty Kolab Reservoir generates hydroelectric power. The Kolab Dam, stretching 646 meters (2,119 feet) in length and rising 55 meters (180 feet) in height, stands as the highest man-made dam at this elevation. The idea for the Kolab Dam originated during British rule and was eventually approved by the Government of Odisha in 1976, reaching completion in 1993. The adjacent Kolab Park, a botanical garden featuring around 200 varieties of flowering plants, beckons visitors for picnics and boating.

Sabara Srikhetra

Considered the second most significant temple of Lord Jagannath after Puri Dham, Sabara Srikhetra was erected in 1972 by the Sabara tribe, earning its name as such. This temple symbolizes the unity of humanity, welcoming people of all castes, creeds, and religions. It stands as the only temple globally where you can encounter all incarnations of Lord Jagannath, accompanied by the use of three distinct chariots during Rath Yatra. Adjacent to the temple, a captivating “Tribal Museum” unfolds the rich tribal heritage and history of Koraput.

Maa Kantabaunsani Temple

The Maa Kantabaunsani Temple, also known as the Thorn Bamboo Goddess, is the most revered deity in Koraput. Nestled near NALCO Township in Damanjodi, she is believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Durga. Unlike traditional temples, this sacred site lacks idols or grand structures, save for the entrance. Surrounded by a natural bamboo jungle, these bamboo trees thrive without human intervention, as they grow and wither on their own. It’s said that a hidden patakhanda(sword) guards the forest, and those with pure hearts can glimpse it, but beware, as only positive intentions are rewarded.

Damanjodi(Hanuman Vatika, Eco park, Red mud & Ash pond, Mines view point)

Damanjodi, nestled amidst lush greenery and maintained by NALCO, serves as the epicenter of Bauxite mining in Odisha, controlling 51% of the nation’s production. It boasts several attractions, including the world’s third-tallest Hanuman statue, a captivating Dinosaur Eco Park, and the breathtaking Panchpatmali Hills viewpoint, where clouds seem to dance at your feet. A remarkable feature is the Asia’s longest magnetic belt, spanning over 18 kilometers, used to transport bauxite from the mines to the factory. Nearby, the Red Mud & Ash Pond offers a surreal glimpse of Mars on Earth while providing an expansive view of the NALCO Factory.
